In 2015, according to The Times, 8% of UK adults claimed to believe in astrology and Zodiac signs and by 2017 this total had already doubled. Then lock down hit us in 2020 and the popularity of astrology and horoscopes sky rocketed.

But what are astrology and zodiac signs?

The Zodiac is a belt shaped region of sky in the apparent annual path of the sun. This strip of sky contains the 12 constellations of the Zodiac that we are all familiar with; Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Astrology is defined by Merriam Webster as the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.

Astrology first originated in Ancient Mesopotamia in the second millennium B.C, here the stars and planets were used to interpret omens and messages from the Gods and the 12 signs were first developed.

Later the Greeks expanded on this and named the 12 signs after constellations and linked them to the dates during which the sun passed through these constellations annually during its crossing of the sky.
